For The Sake Of Fashion

Anybody who is a fan of the classic Prada America’s Cup leather high tops is about to be disgusted. Fila, the Italian sneaker company from back in the day, used to be the hottest shoe on the block. Though the last pair of Fila’s I bought was a pair of Grant Hill’s back in elementary school, they were making somewhat of a comeback with this resurgence of 80’s themed fashions. However their latest creation, the Fila Helmsman, is something that should be detached from the shoe company’s name. I’m still in shock at the blatant bite that Fila took out of one of Miuccia Prada’s prized designs. This shoe looks like a mix of the Prada high top and the Jordan XI’s with the patent leather.

This isn’t the first time Prada has taken a hit in the knock off game. Steve Madden had a line of shoes that were introduced at the top of the century. They possessed the red stripe on the heel of the shoe which is a staple in most of the Prada designs. Coincidentally the Steve Madden knock off looked like the low top version of the Prada America’s Cup shoe.

I know that in the shoe industry, products are designed to compete with other companies, but Fila vs. Prada ... there is no competition. As a consumer, I understand the need for a bargain, and I know how hard times can get, but if you can’t get the real version, don’t sweat it. There are some perfectly good shoes that don’t look like knockoffs. The Fila Helmsman will be available worldwide in February 2008. Please DON’T get caught in a pair...
