All King Crusaders Stand Up!

Thanks to some strong community support, the Martin Luther King High School band was able to raise nearly half a millie to fund a trip to Beijing for the Olympics. The band was THE ONLY American high school band in China to perform during fringe events that surround the Olympics.

There performance was scheduled to be at the Great Wall of China, but from the second they arrived, they began to gather a large audience. As soon as they started warming up, waves of people began swarming and surrounding the area. So many people in fact, that the Chinese police called off the performance, citing a security threat from the large crowd.

All isn't lost though. They will play in a cultural exchange concert on Saturday and they are just enjoying being in a place so far from home. Band member Deshawn Smith said, "Even though we didn't really get to climb up the Great Wall, there's a lot of people in the world who can't say they've been even close to it. So I was very grateful and appreciative of that moment."
