The Good Die Young...

Super Big Rest In Peace to the homie Sean Levert (center). Let most people tell it, Eddie only had one son, but Sean could blow too. My real 80's babies remember the group Levert and Sean stood out vocally just as much as anybody.

Sean Levert passed away yesterday after being rushed to Lutheran Hospital in Cleveland, OH. Levert had been detained last week after pleading guilty to nonsupport (back child support). Officers said he'd gotten sick while incarcerated and had been hallucinating. He was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead less than an hour after arriving. He was 39 years old.

Judging a Book By Its Cover

Something that should have been celebrated has been turned into another outcry of racial overtones. Lebron James is the first black man to ever be on the cover of Vogue Magazine, but the historical relevance is not the story. The photo chosen for the cover has been called "barbaric" and has likened King James to images of King Kong. To critics, Lebron looks like the black beast who wants the beautiful white woman (Gisele). To others, it looks like an enthusiastic basketball player, and a model, both striking poses that show their love for what they do.

In my opinion, the issue is not in the cover. While I do see the problem people are having with it, I can also understand why it isn't a big deal. The real issue here is the obvious lack of a minority presence at Vogue magazine. Any person of color, whether they like or dislike the cover, can look at it and immediately see the room for controversy. Looking through the magazine, there are other pictures from the spread that could have easily been chosen for the cover. All it would've taken was for an editor to see the picture and say this isn't the best photo for the cover. Instead there was not a minority with enough editorial say so, who could object to this tactless picture making the front of the magazine.

This cover brings to mind a few controversial decisions for magazine covers. GolfWeek Magazine recently put a noose on its cover (which led to an editor being fired), after the racially charged incident with Tiger Woods and anchorwoman, Kelly Tilghman. Sports Illustrated put Charles Barkley on their cover breaking free from shackles. Rolling Stone had Dennis Rodman depicting a devil on their magazine. All of these are decisions that I don't believe would have been made with a minority holding some weight in the editorial department. In a search for creativity, magazines have taken the image of the black athlete and made him out to be a monstrous, beastly figure.

While the issue with the Vogue magazine cover is current, the underlying theme has been apparent for years. People behind the scenes of some of the most influential magazines in the world, are not taking into account the consequences that come with their "creativity." Racism is a hypersensitive issue, and some things genuinely mean no harm, but certain ideas are best left alone. The problems start way before these magazines go to print. No editor in their right mind would put a white man with a whip and a noose on the cover of Sports Illustrated, so why put a black man shackled and bound with chains on that same magazine. What some call innovative, others call risque and insensitive. Putting a black man on the cover of Vogue Magazine was a first, but putting one in the editorial room might just be groundbreaking.

Rockwell Told Yall About Facebook!!

“I always feel like, somebody’s watching me…and I have no Privacy”

Facebook, Facebook, Facebook...they’ve managed to find another way to keep my use of the website limited. For anybody who thought they were safe when they blocked their pictures and limited their profiles, they were wrong. Last week there was a security lapse that basically allowed strangers, non-friends and non-members to check out people’s profiles. The security issues came AFTER Facebook did an upgrade and added protection for members to restrict their profiles. Well some computer technician from Canada said F your upgrade and breached the new security measures. He alerted the Associated Press and told them to try it themselves so they did and they confirmed it.

Facebook has since fixed the bug (allegedly) that allowed this computer tech dude and the AP to look into random profiles to see what they could find. However, I’m not impressed or comforted. I know plenty of people who have no pictures or they block everything from everybody, but this just goes to show that anything man made is vulnerable. If it’s on the internet, it can be seen, period. Think it’s a game if you want to...the Associated Press even took a look at one of Mark Zuckerberg’s private photo albums. Nobody’s safe. Make sure you stop doing ignorant stuff in these pictures; you never know who might be watching.

The Text Heard 'Round The World

Today Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy charged Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick and Former Chief of Staff, Christine Beatty with 12 counts on Perjury, Obstruction of Justice and various other indiscretions. A sad day for Detroit. I have spoken my piece on this scandal previously, but in light of the indictment, I have one thought to offer. Kwame, What are you fighting for? Staying in office won't save you from the pending trial, embarrassment, and removal from mayoral post. You are just prolonging the inevitable and in effect, causing the city more strife. Haven't you done enough?

Concert Review: Janelle Monae

Janelle Monae
Smithe's Olde Bar
Atlanta, GA
3/21/08

One of my favorite aspects of living in Atlanta is the access to the dope underground/developing local music scene. There is a show I have interest in checking out literally every week. So much so that I have constantly put off checking out Janelle Monae. For those not up on Ms. Monae, her music sounds like the love child of Anita Baker and Andre 3000. She was signed to Big Boi's Purple Ribbon label at one point, but last year through her own imprint, Wonderland Arts Society, released the critically acclaimed, Metropolis EP.

Well Friday I got to check out Monae live and in person, as she performed tracks from her EP. In perfect voice, Janelle ran through a set that included covers of Anita's Sweet Love and Roberta Flack's Killing Me Softly. Dressed in her uniform of black and white, slacks and tuxedo shirt respectively, Janelle exuded crazy energy on the electronica fused "Violet Stars Happy Hunting" and "Many Moons." She previewed an 80's prince inspired number from her upcoming June release (through her new deal with Bad Boy Records) and showcased her incredible vocals on "Smile." Overall Janelle Monae gave a great show and solidified my stance as a supporter.

The Power of the B.A.D.G.E

Cops really have too much flexibility when it comes to how they handle suspects. Yesterday, 17 year old Darryl Turner was killed by Charlotte police officers after he was tasered at the Food Lion grocery store. Turner worked at the store, and apparently got into it with his manager and after police arrived at the scene, the young man threw an object at his manager (or as the police said, he “assaulted” the manager). Police say Turner began ignoring verbal commands and started approaching the officers, at which point he was tasered. Darryl Turner died a few hours later at a local hospital.

This happened just days after an Ohio police officer who killed an innocent woman in January during a drug raid, was charged with a misdemeanor for her death. Sgt. Joseph Chavalia, shot and killed Tarika Wilson and wounded her 1 year old baby, whom she was holding at the time. The baby had to have his finger amputated because of the wound. Wilson, a 26 year old mother of six, was unarmed when SWAT members came in looking for her boyfriend (who was later arrested). Officer Chavalia faces up to a whopping eight months in jail if convicted for negligent homicide, and he’s been suspended with pay.

Police brutality is an age old tale that minorities have been dealing with for years. Not that it’s acceptable or warranted, but it’s nothing new. Now people aren’t getting abused or excessively handled, they’re getting killed. Police officers will shoot a mother holding her baby, or taser a 17 year old who argued with his manager. I argued with managers plenty of times when I was a teenager, but I never thought I could get killed over it. Cops need to be held a little more accountable for their actions when this kind of carelessness happens. I’d get lynched if I shot a woman and her baby by "accident," but if I had a badge I can get a max of eight months. The same folks that are supposed to protect us, are taking us out one by one.

WATCH OUT FOR THEM ALPHABET BOYS!!

Quote of the Day

On black owned business: "It's a common thing that black folk lose small businesses, but theres nothing wrong with capitalism. The only problem is, they get all the capital, while we get all the 'ism...racism, sexism, classism" Tavis Smiley

The Bootleggers Strike Again...

Gnarls Barkley is the latest music industry victim of wide-spread leaking/bootlegging that has significantly affected a release date. According to Billboard.com, The Odd Couple LP, originally scheduled for an April 1st release date, is now being immediately released to iTunes and physical copies will be O.K.'d for sale when they arrive in stores beginning today.

As someone that loves music, I am curious as to why you illegally download? I can admit to occasional downloading, but I rarely download a complete album. Is it all about getting it for free or is it the insatiable access to new music at any time? I still buy albums by artists with music I truly respect. That being said, I will be copping that Gnarls - If you didn't check out the first album, St. Elsewhere, you are missing out.

Please Comment !!! Why do you download?

Introducing: Gov. David Paterson(D)

Thanks ex-Governor Spitzer, you just helped New York make history. David Paterson, also legally blind, is the first African American Governor of New York. The media is already trying to bring my man down. It was reported that he had an extra-marital affair a few years ago. However, Gov. Paterson and his wife Michelle, admitted that the two of them had affairs and worked their way through it.

Just like the media, he aint even walked in his office and they already shooting him down...anyway check out his inauguration speech from Monday.

For the Sake of Fashion....The Update!!!

Maybe when I said I’d scrap the first person I saw with these Fila’s on, I didn’t make myself clear. I will scrap anyone I see with these on and that includes the average joe on the streets and the famous (or semi-famous) person. This leads me into my latest beef. Robert and Willie of Day 26 (MTB4) better be ready to knuckle up when they see me cuz it’s on. Maybe you didn’t catch it so let me recap: THESE CLOWNS WORE THE FILA FAKE PRADA ON NATIONAL TELEVISION!!!!

Ok not that anybody in the band is the next Puff when it comes to fashion, but certain stuff just should not happen. Fake shoes? Fake Shoes?? FAKE SHOES??? I was expecting if I saw somebody with these on, I’d be in the mall or maybe at the club. But no, there I was in the comfort of my own home when I saw Robert and Willie trying to learn a dance routine in them disrespectful ass Filas. Then I had people try to tell me that those weren’t the Filas, they were the Pradas. The cameraman must have been talking to the same people I was talking to, because a few minutes later he zoomed in on Roberts shoes like he was trying to say “I told you they were the Filas!”

I am a Making the Band fan and I thought if I ever saw Robert we could talk about Detroit, or maybe I could give him some pointers on haircut options (the Scurl aint quite working). I thought if I ever saw Willie, we could talk about having him take that earring out the top of his ear if he wants to save his manhood at all. Now when I see these two, one better hold my arms and the other better hit me cuz if they don’t, I’m gonna have to smack the hell out of both of them...for the sake of fashion.

Support Detroit...

For anybody claiming that Detroit has lost its essence, or for those of you who feel like there is nothing positive going on in the city, and you want to experience something different, I have just the thing. Detroit Young Professionals is a volunteer organization that is all about moving Detroit and its people forward. More than just social networking, DYP is a place for young people to develop their professionalism and to have an opportunity to get involved in the advancement of their communities.

So many people leave Detroit because of the struggling economy or the fact that it seems like there is never anything optimistic to do around town, but DYP is trying to be the solution to that. This past February, the organization held a Leadership Summit at the Renaissance Club. The purpose of the summit was to discuss some of the challenges that young professionals and young leaders face in the city of Detroit.

There are a lot of us that talk a good game and say that we want to be more proactive when it comes to community involvement. Well here is a chance not only to make a contribution to our city, but to also grow as business professionals. To learn more about Detroit Young Professionals, or to find out about upcoming events, visit the website here .
