Marriage is Sooooo Overrated!

Apparently getting married before you have kids is a thing of the past. According to the National Center for Health Statistics, 40 percent of babies born in the U.S. in 2007 were delivered by unwed mothers. Even more alarming is that nearly 72 percent of black women and more than 51 percent of Latinas gave birth out of wedlock, while only 28 percent of white women went unwed before having children.

I’m not judging anybody, but the institution of marriage is officially screwed up according to these stats, especially among minorities. I know a lot of single parents who have done a fine job at raising their child, and I applaud them, but the fact still remains that more often than not being a little more responsible would have prevented an unplanned pregnancy, and a whole lot of questions (i.e. Do I really see a future with this person? Will this person be a good parent? Can I stand this M F'er? etc.)

What do you all think about these statistics?

  1. Nice post...but can we really assume that all unwed pregnancies are unplanned? I know a couple of people who don't believe in marriage but wanted kids. They found someone that they loved enough and considered to be a great prospective your opinion, is this still considered to be an irresponsible decision?

  2. No I agree with you that not all of unwed pregnancies are unplanned, that's why I said "more often than not." Some people still want the family without the vows, and I can't be mad at that because it's a conscious decision.

People who say they don't believe in marriage bring up a whole new batch of politics though...more on that later!
