Sports columnist and national radio host, Stephen A. Smith, has reported that Allen Iverson has decided to retire from the NBA. Iverson was recently released from a very short-lived contract with the Memphis Grizzlies, and is coming off of a controversial 2008-2009 season with the Detroit Pistons. However, despite his recent mishaps, Iverson is one of the best basketball players in NBA history and arguably the best small guard to ever play the game.
In addition to his contributions on the basketball court, A.I. changed the culture of the NBA to what it is today. From the tattoos, to the cornrows, Iverson brought a persona to the league that it could not ignore. Iverson wasn't the first to do these things, but he was the first MVP and perinnial All-Star to separate himself from the old school clean cut look of past NBA players.
Iverson is one of the toughest players, and best scorers to touch a basketball. His affect on urban culture is unparalleled. He's the only sports player I can think of who's shoe sales could even stand next to Michael Jordan. It's a sad day in basketball, but Allen Iverson's career was as potent as his legendary crossover. Regardless of how his career is ending, Allen Iverson is a cultural and basketball icon if there ever was one.
