"Bi-Racial...Not Black Damn it"

Check out this trailer for the documentary "Bi-Racial...Not Black Damn it". It discusses the challenges bi-racial people face when trying to find self identity in a world that is usually black or white and unwilling to accept any gray areas. The documentary also looks at how bi-racial people can feel forced to identify with a side that may not even accept who they really are.

Make sure you check the trailer, there are some very interesting points made.

Discuss: CNN Black In America 2

With the first Black in America series, a lot of people felt like nothing was brought to light that people didn't already know. Many viewers felt like CNN had the right idea, but the execution wasn't there. Well Soledad O'Brien and CNN heard the feedback, and after viewing Black in America 2, do you feel like the show did a better job displaying black experiences in this country than they did the first time around?

Make sure you check out part two of CNN's Black in America 2 tonight at 8pm ET.

Does This Look Like A Criminal?

According to Cambridge, MA police officers, Henry Louis Gates Jr. looked like he was breaking into a house near Harvard University's campus. The problem was, the house he was "breaking into" was his own. The other problem, Gates is one of the most prestigious scholars in the world.

A woman called police to report a possible break-in at Gates' home. Gates, who had just returned from China, was soon approached by police while standing in the foyer of the house. After initially refusing to show identification, Gates complied with the officers request, but when he asked for the officers i.d. and badge number, he claims the officer refused to give it to him.

Gates was eventually arrested for disorderly conduct; charges that have since been dropped. Gates is the director of the W.E.B. Du Bois Institute for African and African-American Research at Harvard University, and an acclaimed PBS documentarian. His arrest has sparked many debates on race relations and post-racial societal views.

Do you feel that society has truly moved forward in changing prejudices and racism? Has Barack Obama helped to change the face of how the world sees minorities?

Let's discuss...

Random Question of the Day: Bread Winner Edition

Ladies, could you date or perhaps be married to a man who made less money than you?

Fellas, could you date or be married to a woman who made more money than you?

Bonus: With women graduating from undergraduate, and continued education college programs at an increasingly high rate (especially among minorities), should the rules for which gender makes more money and ultimately becomes the breadwinner adapt to those changes?

Sad But True...

Heard this on the radio earlier. Didn't have time to write down the exact source, but the stats speak for themelves.

1 out of 3 teenagers from age 13 to age 18 have never used any form of birth control (condoms, oral contraceptives, shots, etc.).

The children today have got to realize that unprotected sex, and multiple sexual partners are dangerous. This is especially dangerous among teenagers, most of whom are unable, unwilling, or embarrassed to get checked up when they need to. Educate your children. Abstinence, will always be the safest route, but to the children and adults who are sexually active, please use protection and get yourself checked out regularly.

P.S....Birth control pills do not prevent diseases.

Ya' Turnin Me Off

I think Keri Hilson is a lovely lovely young lady; pretty as a peach. But this outfit here (click the pic for a larger image)...

I'm starting to think the lines between stylish and foolish are becoming extremely blurred. I know with people, especially entertainers, the quest to look different will drive you toward some unchartered fashion territories. However, these days it seems like people walk into their closet, say "what is the wildest thing I own that doesn't match the second wildest thing I own and let me put them on with some shoes and accessories that don't go with anything."

Let's keep the fashion FRESH!

Interracial Dating vs. Societal Backlash

Why is it that in 2009, interracial dating is still considered taboo?

I recently watched Jungle Fever and I remember being a naive child thinking that people didn't seriously react to interracial dating so insanely. I assumed that the movie was nothing more than fiction on film, like most other movies. Spike Lee however, opened up a topic that, to this day makes some people cringe. and infuriates others. It was nearly twenty years ago when Lee tackled interracial romance and from what I read on blogs and message boards, the notion of interracial dating has come so far, yet hasn't really gone anywhere at all.

When a black man dates a woman who is white, or who is a little too fair skinned, he has to prepare for ostracism every time he steps outside with the woman. When a black woman brings a non-black man home, she has to make sure he's tough enough to deal with the stares of disapproval he'll receive from other black men. It's not easy trying to please your entire race and be with someone who makes you happy.

People have got to open their minds up to the possibility that happiness is in fact colorblind. We live in the most diverse country in the world, yet it remains the most bigoted. If you were given the choice between being in a bad relationship with someone of the same race, or a good one with someone who looks nothing like you, would you choose what's good for you, or what is considered socially acceptable?

TV One Gives Roland a Shot

African-American entertainment provider, TV One announced yesterday (7/6) that TV One political editor, CNN analyst and ESSENCE columnist Roland Martin will be in the driver's seat for his own one hour news program this fall. Slated to touch on all areas of politics from a distinctly African-American perspective, the hour series, tentatively entitled Washington Watch with Roland Martin, is slated to debut Sunday, Sept. 27 and will air weekly at 11 AM and 5 PM ET. TV One anticipates the show having a strong interactive focus and a variety of panelists and guests that will range from journalists to experts.

I am happy for Roland Martin. I think that he is a great representation for Black people in his key presence on CNN and I believe that this new show will be another vehicle for his prominence as a black thought leader to grow.
