The First Lady is taking childhood obesity issues in to her own hands. Michelle Obama has been taking to multiple media outlets this week to educate Americans on the danger of obesity amongst the youth. Entitled the Let's Move Initiative at the White House, Obama and a staff of health experts will be working to promote the best ways to get kids active and eating right. The First Lady says "small changes" are the key, such as smaller portion sizes, more cooked meals and substituting sugary drinks with milk, water and fresh-squeezed juices.
CNN reports that the task force, according to the memorandum, will have 90 days to craft a plan encouraging "optimal coordination" between the federal government and both the private and nonprofit sectors. Several Cabinet members, including the secretaries of Interior, Agriculture and Health and Human Services, will serve on the task force to complement Michelle Obama's public awareness effort.
My family has a history of diabetes and we all know that this condition can be directly related to obesity. I applaud our First Lady for taking action on a silent killer in this country.
