Are You Tired of Barack's Messages?

After creating arguably the most innovative presidential campaign (or any public office for that matter) in modern history, Barack Obama had turned over a new leaf. He along with campaign manager David Plouffe captured an untapped market of voters by utilizing social media and other modern forms of communication (text messaging, email alerts, etc.) to really drive home the "Yes We Can" message; and it worked to perfection. The personalized emails and texts, or the messages on Facebook and Twitter, made you feel like you were directly connected to the eventual president's campaign.

Now however, the response to this method has become a little different than it was during the campaign trail. Some people delete the text messages immediately. Others go days without reading the emails, if they ever get to them at all. And with the hundreds of other political figures who chose to copy the same method during recent local campaigns, the idea of using new media as a part of your campaign has become a little stale to a lot of people.

What seemed like a refreshing change in the political approach has now become watered down to some only a year into Obama's Presidency. So I ask, do you think that President Obama should try to find another new and innovative medium(s) to get his messages out to the current generation, or do you feel like he should continue with what got him here?

What Was Doper: Jacket Edition (Detroit Special)

This may or may not be completely regional and directed to the Detroit and surrounding midwest area trends that popped up in the earlier part of the decade (and if you still live in Detroit the Al Wissam's are probably still coming out the closet in the winter), so my apologies if you have no opinion on the matter.

But to those folks in the know, tell us which trend was Doper: The Race Car Jackets (M&M's, Target, Pepsi, Tide, etc.) or the Al Wissam leather Jackets (with or without the fur)???

Let the voting begin!

What's Love Got To Do With It?

One thing I've never understood about women is their willingness to try to make a relationship work that just doesn't. So many women convince themselves that they are with the man of their dreams, and the manipulation, arguments, mistreatment, and belittling is just a phase. I have a lot of female friends so I hear the stories all the time about how their dude is inconsiderate, doesn't spend any time with them, he's mean, and he doesn't allow them to go anywhere, and it confuses me why a woman will stay with this type of guy.

Now don't get me wrong, no person or relationship is perfect, but if you're talking about your relationship and all you describe is a scene of negativity and verbal/mental abuse, and then follow that with, "but I love him," something is wrong. I have one friend whose boyfriend makes her feel like she's worth as much as he decides she's worth, and she swears up and down she's in love. She's as smart and capable as any girl I know, and she could get someone who appreciates her, but she continues to opt for the guy who acts like he's the catch and she should consider herself lucky to be in the relationship.

Too many women only acknowledge abuse as physical, but verbally and mentally abusive relationships can do just as much damage to a woman's psyche. When someone makes you question your self worth, or whether you're capable of finding anyone better than them, they are abusing your mind. They are trying to lower your self esteem to the point that they gain control over what you allow yourself to put up with in a relationship. This type of relationship is the kind that makes a woman stay with a guy for years because she's been convinced that she's not good enough to find anything else. The scarier part is, it's this kind of relationship that forms a pattern for the type of guy she finds herself attracted to.

I hate to see women allow themselves to be manipulated and controlled by spineless dudes. Even worse is when they confuse this abuse with love and emotion. A lot of young women go through this and it distorts their view of what a good man or a good relationship is. Women are willing to put up with a lot to make a relationship work, but stretching out a bad relationship doesn't make you a down ass chick, it makes you foolish. When a relationship consistently makes you unhappy you have to be adult enough to acknowledge that it isn't healthy and get out before it does serious damage.

Spotlight: Black College Football Hall of Fame

Former professional football quarterbacks Doug Williams and James Harris have come together to establish a hall of fame for football players from the nation's traditionally black universities. Based in Atlanta, the Black College Football Hall of Fame is an online tribute to the players inducted, however when the College Football Hall of Fame moves to Atlanta in 2012, organizers hope to be given space in that building for the black college hall.

Recently, the inaugural class was announced. Among the eight inductees are former coach Eddie Robinson (Grambling State University), former running back Walter Payton (Jackson State University), and former wide receiver Jerry Rice (Mississippi Valley State University).

The Inaugural Ceremony will be held February 20, 2010 at the Four Seasons Atlanta. To find out more info go to www.blackcollegefootballhof.org

Random Question of the Day: Soulmate Edition

Popular culture (movies, television shows, music, etc.) has trained most people to believe that when it comes to love and romance, there is someone out there for all us. But not just any someone, there is supposedly someone out there who understands exactly who you are and seems is if they were tailor made just for you.

Do you believe in the concept of "the one" or do you think that all relationships have the potential to go far if both parties are willing to put in the work?

Aaliyah: Gone But Never Forgotten

Talented. Driven. Beautiful. Mysterious.

All these words can describe Aaliyah Dana Haughton. A noted dancer, singer and actress, Aaliyah was the proverbial triple threat. Born in Brooklyn but raised in Detroit, Aaliyah rose to superstardom in the mid-90's with the release of her debut album, Age Ain't Nothin' But A Number. She followed her debut with the even more popular sophomore release, One In A Million, which saw the singer align with the now mega-producer, Timbaland. Aaliyah went on to star in major motion picture films and release her self-titled third album before her untimely death in 2001. Today we celebrate Aaliyah's birthday. She would have been 31 years old.

Our Hearts Go Out To Haiti

Send up a prayer to those affected by the earthquake that shook Port-Au-Prince, Haiti to its core on Tuesday. If ever there was a country that did not need this type of devastation, it was Haiti. The country has produced some of the worlds most resilient people, but it's almost as if this nation, so full of culture, sits somewhere on earth that the rest of the world would like to forget is there.

A while back I wrote about the gluttons of our American society, and how much our country and so many of the people in it only concern themselves with their own greed, while other nations spend their days wondering if they'll eat a meal. Well now we have a chance to help out our fellow man in one of this worlds darkest hours. When you strip away the socioeconomic status', the corporate bail outs, and all the politics, the world still shares one commonality; it's people.

If you want to help out the people affected by the earthquake in Haiti, click here to find out how you can make a donation to the American Red Cross.

God Bless...

NYC Shuts Soda Down

New York has a new PSA hitting the web and airwaves about the dangers of soda consumption. The soda industry is striking back against the ads stating that they have now introduced a multitude of healthy options and that most sodas are fat-free. What is your take on the debate? Do you think New York is within it's right to come against the Soda Industry or should consumers be left to make their own judgement when it comes to Pop?

Tatiana Ali Returns To TV(One)

Actress Tatiana Ali (known for her long-running role as Ashley on The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air) is returning to the small screen in a big way. Ali will star in the Martin Lawrence executive produced sitcom, Love That Girl!, a 30 minute vehicle focused on a young divorcee who returns home to California for a second chance in life and career.

"We are delighted to be a part of this exciting project and bring this fresh, new comedy to TV One viewers," said TV One Senior Vice President of Original Programming Toni Judkins. What's Your Opinion On: Nicki Minaj

How do you feel about Nicki Minaj?

I ask because I'm not as impressed as a lot of people are claiming to be. I can appreciate her trying to make a name as a female rap artist during a time when women are having such a difficult time re-establishing respect in the rap game, but I'd be lying if I told you her music has wowed me. Her voice and "black barbie doll" persona seem more like a gimick than actual talent, and If you could name me five songs by her (not featuring her) I'd be shocked.

Nevertheless, that's my opinion, so let us know what you think about Nicki.

10 Things Not To Buy In 2010

SmartMoney starts out the year with an informative piece on purchases we should avoid in this new year.

The rational behind the article is that these items can be either sourced through alternative methods at reduced costs or can lead to inflated spending. I agree with most of the ideas presented and thought I would share the list.

1. DVDs
2. Home Telephone Service
3. External Hard Drives
4. Non BB or iPhone Smart Phones
5. Compact Digital Cameras
6. Newspaper Subscriptions
7. CDs
8. New College Textbooks
9. Gas-Guzzling Cars
10. Energy-inefficient homes and appliances
