The Pot Calling the Kettle Black

So last weekend the Sprite Step Off happened. You may have heard that the sorority that won was not a part of the Divine 9 or a multicultural organization. They were the Zeta Tau Alpha's from the University of Arkansas. A predominately white sorority won the step show, the $100,000 grand prize, and everyone went home happy...until the racists came out.

All over the internet and all through Atlanta (where the show was held), people were irate at the thought of a non-black Greek organization winning the step show; as if stepping is legally owned by African-Americans. Anyway, people complained to the point that today Coca-Cola found a "scoring error" that changed the results, and now the Zeta Tau Alpha's have to share their title with the AKA's, who came in 2nd place.

I'm not saying there wasn't a legit "scoring error," but I do think that with the shoe on the other foot, the AKA's would have never been asked to share their title with this white organization based on a miscount. If folks didn't want the girls to win, they should've been up front with their prejudice and said this is a "Blacks Only" step show. They won regional qualifying matches and earned the right to compete just like everyone else and their chances at winning weren't increased because they were white. Had they gotten on that stage and looked foolish they would've been laughed at and taunted all the way back to Arkansas.

It's ok for people to admire something that blacks are known for and try to excel at it. We do it all the time. Basketball, football, and golf weren't always dominated by black athletes. Just like those sports, this step show wasn't based on race, it was based on skill. On this night, one organization proved itself more skilled than its competitors. Their victory shouldn't be asterisked because they looked differently than everyone they were up against---besides, they're all Greek.

Mind Ya Business!

The last time I checked, Tiger Woods married one woman. He had children with that one woman, and he pledged before one God that he would stay faithful and honest to that one woman. The last time I checked, she's the only person who deserves an apology for his infidelities. In this era of "news" coming from social media sites, gossip blogs, and thirsty columnists looking for a way to write controversial articles that drive traffic to a website, the public has extended their sense of entitlement to new heights (and lows).

I don't give two damn's about Tiger Woods cheating on his wife. He didn't commit a criminal act, he didn't break any laws, he didn't harm anyone, and unlike politically affiliated cheaters, his bad judgment doesn't affect what he does for a living. Golf and most of the sponsors who dropped him from their roster will notice that without Tiger, they have a replaceable product. The man didn't reach billionaire status because he's your everyday athlete.

People today have become so invested in celebrity gossip that they've forgotten where to draw the line for what's off limits. Just because a celebrity makes a mistake or does something stupid, doesn't mean they are entitled to explain it to the rest of the world. Imagine if you cheated on your spouse, and lost your job, your friends, and possibly your family. How much more humiliating would it be to have to stand in front of the entire world just to say you're sorry?

Shani Davis Wins Gold in 1,000 meter Speedskating

Four years ago, speedskater Shani Davis became the first African-American to win an individual gold medal in the Winter Olympics. Wednesday, he became the first male skater of any ethnicity to win the 1,000 meter Olympic speedskating race twice.

I don't really do the Winter Olympic Games, but I had to shout out Shani for making people respect his skills, not because of his race, but because he's the best person racing.

Lacefront Warning

For every girl out there considering doing something silly to their head, look at what can happen.

With the lacefront: Brandy looks like a twilight werewolf with that mess on her head! She look like a damn fool!

After the lacefront: Kelly looks like she chewed up her hairline and spit it back out on her head. She look like a damn fool!

The moral of the story is, before you sit down and let a beautician put that lacefront in, know that you will look retarded when you get it, and retardeder when you get it out. You've been warned.

Michelle Obama Takes On Childhood Obesity

The First Lady is taking childhood obesity issues in to her own hands. Michelle Obama has been taking to multiple media outlets this week to educate Americans on the danger of obesity amongst the youth. Entitled the Let's Move Initiative at the White House, Obama and a staff of health experts will be working to promote the best ways to get kids active and eating right. The First Lady says "small changes" are the key, such as smaller portion sizes, more cooked meals and substituting sugary drinks with milk, water and fresh-squeezed juices.

CNN reports that the task force, according to the memorandum, will have 90 days to craft a plan encouraging "optimal coordination" between the federal government and both the private and nonprofit sectors. Several Cabinet members, including the secretaries of Interior, Agriculture and Health and Human Services, will serve on the task force to complement Michelle Obama's public awareness effort.

My family has a history of diabetes and we all know that this condition can be directly related to obesity. I applaud our First Lady for taking action on a silent killer in this country.

Would You Give Away Nearly $5million?

Karl Rabeder, an Austrian millionaire, is having an issue with all the money he has, so he's decided to give it away. All of it. The 3,500 sq. foot villa with the lake; the farmhouse sitting on 42 acres; and the Hawaiian vacations.
"For a long time I believed that more wealth and luxury automatically meant more happiness. My idea is to have nothing left. Absolutely nothing. I had the feeling I was working as a slave for things that I did not wish for or need. I have the feeling that there are lot of people doing the same thing."
What do you think about this? Would you give away your millions if it meant being happier?

Notice Anything Different?

MTV, after decades of using the tagline, "Music Television," in its logo has removed the tagline entirely. This move is the official indication that the channel has left behind its musical roots and is now completely focused on producing reality shows. I don't know why they waited until now to do this since they haven't played music in about three years.

They also have a see-through version of the logo which allows them to feature the faces of current entertainers and cast members from their slate of shows.

Personally I'm underwhelmed, but then again, I don't watch MTV so I would be.

Random Question of the Day: Black Women Edition

To a lot of black women, good black men are hard to come by and even harder to keep. As black women continue to regularly move up the corporate ladder, their dating pool becomes even more shallow when it comes to finding a "qualified" black man.

Would you consider dating outside your race to find love, or will you continue to stick it out and wait on your black knight in shining armor to come along? Why?

In real life this billboard was purchased by a group of small business owners in Minnesota, some of whom were allegedly Obama supporters. New Orleans Elects First White Mayor In 30 Years

Louisiana Lt. Gov, Mitch Landrieu was elected the first white mayor of the city of New Orleans since 1979, the year his father left office. Landrieu won 66% of the vote in what turned out to be a landslide over the other 10 mayoral candidates.

Landrieu lost to current term-limited Mayor Ray Nagin four years ago, but Nagin's popularity fell sharply in the years following Hurricane Katrina. Landrieu held his victory party at the Roosevelt hotel, which recently reopened after post-Katrina restoration. He had a brass band playing Mardi Gras music as he led a "Who Dat" chant for the Super Bowl bound New Orleans Saints.

Don't Get Got: America's Biggest Rip-offs

1. Text Messaging: The messages cost carriers only about one-third of a cent to deliver, but typically cost 20 cents outgoing and 10 cents incoming for consumers, i.e. as much as a 6,500% markup.

2. Popcorn: Know that when you go to a movie, the popcorn is what is keeping your local movie house open for business. A medium bag of popcorn costs 60 cents to make, but on average retails for $6.

3. Freecreditreport.com: A service that continuously advertises it's free service had to be a rip-off, right? Well, it is. By signing up you are automatically enrolled in a 14.99 per month service that lasts for one year.

4. Brand Name Painkillers: A 50-ct bottle of Tylenol on average will cost you about 9 bucks, where as a generic painkiller will run you about $5. You are paying 60% more for the same thing. The FDA has requirements of generic drugs that they use the same active ingredients as the more expensive brand name offerings.

5. Restaurant Wine: "Restaurants mark up cheaper bottles by an average of three times the retail price, while the prices of higher end wines are typically doubled" says Ronn Wiegand, a master sommelier who runs the industry newsletter RestaurantWine. So that means a bottle of Sutter Home which costs $4 will run you about $12 or more.

See the full list of Rip-offs at CNN.

I Miss the Halftime Show

Dear Superbowl Folks,

I'm one of the games biggest fans. I've been tuning in to the big game ever since I can remember. I was there for some of the highest highs, like when my favorite musician, Prince, murdered the halftime show with the Purple guitar. I was also there for one of the lowest lows, when Janet Jackson's milk-maker popped out of her shirt. Now I'll be honest, I was in college and at that age and I couldn't have been more excited about what I'd just seen. But now that I'm older, I understand the conservative reaction to the Superbowl's immediately following that one. The infamous wardrobe malfunction couldn't happen again, and I humbly agreed with that.

However, it's been years, six to be exact. We've suffered through Bruce Springsteen halftime shows, and this year we have to deal with The Who...who? Two things are synonymous with the Superbowl; halftime shows and commercials. Well the commercials suck now, but that's not your fault Superbowl people. However you do have control of the halftime performers, and I promise you everybody watching the game is not 45 or older. STOP with the middle aged rock and roll artists. There are plenty of people who can perform and not be as risque as Janet Jackson. I'll take Beyonce over Bob Dillan. I don't want to see the Bee Gee's, or Sting, or Elvis every year for the rest of my life.

Let's put some young blood back into the halftime show. The fans have suffered long enough. One booby don't stop no show.

Thanks,

-Ant

If You're So Perfect, Why Are You Single?

One thing that irritates me about a lot of single women is when they act as if having a boyfriend/fiance/husband is something that they're supposed to have. As if when they were born, God promised them a relationship by the time they turned 25. Then they'll use the tired excuses like, "all the good men are taken," as if they themselves are the definition of the perfect woman. You can be educated, independent, and have a job that pays you hundreds of thousands of dollars, but does that make you a good woman? Not particularly.

Single women have a habit of blaming the world for them being single instead of looking at themselves. They think that their "stats" make them a catch, and while on paper they may be appealing, a real man is looking for more than something that looks good on the surface. Dudes have been around long enough to know that pretty, long hair, and a nice body doesn't equal perfection. In sports, just because you're eligible to be drafted doesn't mean that a team wants you. Those players who aren't drafted continue to work on their game to make themselves a better player until the time comes where a team feels as if they can't let this player pass them up. In life, just because you're single doesn't mean men will be waiting at your doorstep begging you to be their next franchise player. So until then just work on your game, continue to make yourself a better, more well-rounded person, and eventually a man will come along and treat you as if he couldn't let you pass him by.

Instead of sitting around wondering when your man is going to come along, try sitting around and considering what you'll really be able to bring to the relationship when he does come. Some women, and people in general, convince themselves that they are the ideal person and that anybody who is with them should consider themselves lucky. Everybody who's single got there for a reason. Maybe they have problems with commitment, they're selfish, they're too much of a workaholic, or they're overbearing. Figure out why you're single and how you can work on that. Nobody is perfect, and nobody is entitled to being in a relationship, and as long as you think you're the perfect catch, you'll be sitting at home wondering why nobody is chasing after you in the first place.

Needs A Splash of Color

Is this how young Hollywood looks to you? According to Vanity Fair the new wave of talented actresses are extremely pale, scarily thin caucasian women.

Nobody over there thought that Zoe Saldana might be a good mention. She was only a star in the highest grossing film ever made (Avatar) and a co-star in last summers extremely well received Star Trek remake. Maybe Freida Pinto from the Academy Award winning film Slumdog Millionaire could've gotten a nod for the issue. Possibly Gabourey Sidibe, who in her first role ever just received an Oscar nomination for Precious. Hell maybe even America Ferrera from the Emmy Award winning series Ugly Betty could have made it.

Mainstream America just showed the world once again that looking like you can star in one of those silly ass melodramatic vampire love stories is more important than recognizing actual talent. Hell two of the girls on the current cover were already featured on the "Hollywood's New Wave" issue from two years ago, so I'm sure there was room to swap them out.

My issue lies with the fact that it's still commonplace to believe that thin white and mildly attractive remains a better magazine seller than black/hispanic/asian and talented. I hate that when given an opportunity to do something different than what was previously done, the higher-ups still sign off on the norm. With only a few actresses of color who actually get respectable roles, it wouldn't have hurt Vanity Fair to include one in this issue, especially when there is a whole new crop of young up-and-coming minority actresses who would've been perfect for it.

Marriage Is Dead

Marriage.

Take a second to look at that word. What do you immediately associate with that word? Better yet, how would you define marriage in your own words?

The likelihood, if you are anything like me, is that the word brings about one million question marks when searching for associations, especially positive ones. Not because I haven’t seen the fruits of a loving marriage and lifelong partnership, because Ern & Charlotte (my folks) have been married for over 30 years.

My bewilderment for marriage comes from the rampant disrespect for the once sacred union in modern American culture. What was once viewed as a life-long assertion for monogamy and partnership has been reduced to something as transitory as leasing a new car. Not only have we stolen the most extraordinary elements of marriage (moving in together, having children) and sold them to everyday life, we have allowed the value of such a union to be viewed in the same light as an at-will contract.

I plan to marry. Once. The vows between my future wife and I will mean more than signatures on a piece of paper or promises to one another. The most critical piece of a marriage is the realization that your connection is a gift from God that should be honored and upheld at all costs. I see so many people my age and younger getting married and divorced in less time than it takes to microwave a TV dinner. Let’s wake up people. Marriage is about more than a wedding and your commitment should last longer than a warranty. Marry for the right reasons or don’t marry at all.
